Wolves’ transfer plans restricted as Pereira takes helm
As Wolverhampton Wanderers prepare to appoint Vitor Pereira as their new manager, concerning reports have emerged regarding the club’s transfer capabilities ahead of the January window.
Wolves currently sit second from bottom in the Premier League, five points adrift of safety. The poor run of form cost Gary O’Neil his job, with Portuguese coach Pereira now set to take charge on an 18-month contract.
However, according to football insider Pete O’Rourke, Pereira will have very limited funds to work with in the upcoming transfer window. This is despite Wolves’ significant player sales in recent years, as the club is reportedly in a precarious financial position.
The restricted budget is said to be a result of heavy spending in the summer, when Wolves brought in eight new signings including midfielders Andre and Rodrigo Gomes for substantial fees. There are also concerns about potentially breaching Premier League profit and sustainability rules.
This news will be worrying for Wolves fans hoping to see reinforcements brought in to aid the relegation battle. Recent links to Everton defender Ben Godfrey now seem unlikely to materialize into a permanent deal, though a loan move remains possible.
Pereira faces a significant challenge to keep Wolves in the top flight with minimal transfer backing. His first game in charge could come as soon as Sunday against Leicester City, as he looks to make an immediate impact with the current squad at his disposal.
