Vitor Pereira Should Appoint Craig Dawson as Wolves’ New Captain

As Vitor Pereira prepares to take the reins at Wolverhampton Wanderers, one of his first decisions should be appointing a new team captain. While Nelson Semedo currently wears the armband, veteran defender Craig Dawson may be a better choice to lead the squad.

Semedo was given the captaincy by former manager Gary O’Neil after Mario Lemina was stripped of the role. However, Semedo’s performances have been inconsistent this season and his contract expires next summer, raising questions about his long-term future at the club.

In contrast, 34-year-old Dawson brings a wealth of Premier League experience and leadership qualities. Though he had a nightmare outing against Everton recently, scoring two own goals, Dawson has generally been a steady presence in Wolves’ backline since joining in 2023.

Last season, Dawson averaged 4.4 duels won per game as Wolves comfortably avoided relegation. He has continued to perform well this campaign, including limiting Erling Haaland to just 13 touches when Manchester City visited Molineux in October.

Dawson is also a threat from set-pieces, having scored 22 goals in his career as a center-back. His willingness to put his body on the line epitomizes the fighting spirit Pereira will want to instill in the squad.

While Dawson’s contract also expires next summer, former manager O’Neil praised his fitness and suggested he could play into his 40s. By naming Dawson captain, Pereira would be sending a message about the importance of experience and commitment as Wolves look to climb the table under new leadership.
