Vieira praises Genoa’s defensive resilience in Milan stalemate

Genoa manager Patrick Vieira expressed satisfaction with his team’s defensive performance following their 0-0 draw against AC Milan at the San Siro. While acknowledging room for improvement in attack, Vieira emphasized the importance of the point earned and the team’s growing defensive stability.

Since taking over from Alberto Gilardino last month, Vieira has maintained an unbeaten record, securing one win and three draws. The latest result against Milan showcased Genoa’s ability to frustrate a top-tier opponent, with goalkeeper Nicola Leali rarely troubled throughout the match.

“Visiting San Siro is always challenging, but I believe we delivered a solid performance tonight,” Vieira commented in his post-match interview. “While we could have been more productive offensively, our collective defensive effort was crucial. We faced some difficult moments, but the squad demonstrated great unity and sacrifice for the team’s benefit.”

Vieira noted that Genoa has been performing better away from home recently, suggesting that playing with less pressure might be a factor. “You can sense we play with more composure on the road, perhaps due to reduced pressure,” he observed. “Our upcoming home fixture against Napoli will be another important test of our character and ability to create chances.”

The match marked Genoa’s third consecutive clean sheet in four games under Vieira’s leadership. When questioned about his decision to leave striker Mario Balotelli on the bench despite limited scoring opportunities, Vieira emphasized the importance of maintaining team balance and structure.

Coincidentally, the game fell on Milan’s 125th anniversary celebration, adding a personal touch for Vieira, who briefly played for the Rossoneri in the 1995-96 season.
