Van Basten: “AC Milan’s Struggles Pain Me, Inter’s Dominance is Heartbreaking”
Dutch football legend Marco van Basten recently expressed his deep connection to AC Milan and his distress over the club’s current situation. In an exclusive interview, the former striker shared his thoughts on Milan’s past glories and present challenges.
“Being inducted into the AC Milan Hall of Fame is a great honor,” van Basten stated. “The red and black colors, the fans, and the club will always hold a special place in my heart. Even though I live in the Netherlands, checking Milan’s results is always my first priority when they play.”
Reflecting on his time with the club, van Basten highlighted the 1988-89 European Cup final victory against Steaua Bucharest as a pivotal moment. “It was the realization of Berlusconi’s dream to reach the top of the world while playing spectacular football,” he recalled. The former player praised the unity within the club during that era, citing the experienced leadership of Berlusconi and Galliani.
Van Basten also reminisced about the exceptional team he was part of, mentioning defensive stalwarts like Baresi and Maldini, midfield maestros such as Ancelotti and Rijkaard, and formidable attacking partners like Gullit. “Our mentality was to win at all costs, even when trailing with just minutes left,” he added.
Addressing Milan’s current struggles, van Basten expressed his pain at seeing Inter Milan’s recent dominance. “It’s been a difficult period for Milan fans,” he admitted. However, he remains optimistic about the club’s future, suggesting that incorporating more Italian players could potentially help.
The Dutch icon also commented on the current coach, Stefano Pioli, acknowledging the challenges he faces compared to the star-studded teams of the past. “We need to give Pioli time to work and be patient,” van Basten advised. He concluded by expressing his hope to return to San Siro after Milan secures another major trophy.
