Unusual Goal Disallowance in Venezia-Cagliari Match

An extraordinary event unfolded during the Serie A fixture between Venezia and Cagliari on matchday 17. The disallowance of Oristanio’s goal for the home team came under unusual circumstances.

In the 62nd minute, Pohjanpalo set up Oristanio, who then lobbed the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper Sherri. However, the goal was ruled out for offside. The VAR replay revealed an incredibly tight offside decision, with Pohjanpalo’s heel being marginally beyond the last defender.

This extremely close call, determined by mere millimeters, ultimately cost Oristanio his goal and highlighted the precision of modern offside technology in football.

The match lineups were as follows:

Venezia (3-4-2-1): Stankovic; Altare, Idzes, Sverko; Ellertsson, Caviglia, Andersen, Zampano; Busio, Oristanio; Pohjanpalo. Manager: Di Francesco

Cagliari (4-2-3-1): Sherri; Augello, Luperto, Mina, Zappa; Adopo, Makoumbou; Deiola (Lapadula 53′), Gaetano, Zortea; Piccoli. Manager: Nicola

The match was officiated by Marco Guida from Torre Annunziata.
