Tottenham Set to Open Negotiations for Leading Brazilian Goalkeeper
Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to begin discussions to acquire Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor on a permanent transfer, according to recent reports. The North London club is seeking a new backup goalkeeper, as current number two Fraser Forster’s contract expires at the end of this season.
Victor emerged as the top goalkeeper in the Brazilian Serie A last season, leading the league with seven clean sheets. He also ranked highly among goalkeepers in several other statistical categories. The 28-year-old is expected to be available for a fee in the range of £7-8 million.
While Tottenham and Manchester United are both reportedly interested, any potential deal would likely not occur until the summer transfer window. Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou previously indicated the club would not sign a free agent goalkeeper in January despite an injury to starter Guglielmo Vicario.
“We’re satisfied with our current goalkeeping options. Signing a free agent now wouldn’t benefit us,” Postecoglou stated last month. “That’s why we have a full squad of players here.”
However, with Forster set to depart in the coming months, Victor could emerge as the top candidate to fill the backup goalkeeper role at Tottenham next season. The club appears ready to open negotiations soon to potentially secure his services for the 2024-25 campaign.
