Tottenham Hit Jackpot by Selling Talented Youngster Praised by Pochettino
Tottenham Hotspur have demonstrated their transfer market acumen once again by offloading promising midfielder Oliver Skipp to Leicester City for over £20 million. This sale represents excellent business for Spurs, who have managed to secure a substantial fee for a player struggling to break into the first team.
Skipp was once highly regarded at Tottenham, with former manager Mauricio Pochettino describing him as “a top player and a top kid” following his debut in 2018. José Mourinho also praised the youngster as “phenomenal” during his tenure.
However, Skipp’s path to regular first-team football became increasingly unclear, particularly under current manager Ange Postecoglou. The decision to sell him, while unpopular with some fans, now appears to be a shrewd move.
Since joining Leicester, Skipp has made just 13 appearances totaling 798 minutes across all competitions. The Foxes have only won two league games and two League Cup matches with him in the side. While there is still time for Skipp to fulfill his potential, Tottenham’s decision to cash in on the academy graduate currently looks like excellent business.
This sale follows other successful transfers by Spurs, including the departures of Emerson Royal to AC Milan for £13 million and Joe Rodon to Leeds United for around £10 million. These deals further demonstrate Tottenham’s ability to extract value from their squad players in the transfer market.
While Skipp may yet develop into a top-class midfielder, Tottenham’s decision to sell him for a substantial fee appears to be another example of the club’s transfer market expertise. The North London side continue to show their ability to make tough but financially rewarding decisions in the player trading arena.
