Southampton Set to Acquire Rennes’ Albert Grønbæk in January Transfer Window

Southampton FC is on the verge of securing the services of Stade Rennais midfielder Albert Grønbæk. The 23-year-old Danish player has reportedly reached an agreement in principle with the English club, signaling a potential end to his brief stint in France.

Grønbæk joined Rennes last summer in a €12 million transfer from Norwegian club Bødo/Glimt. However, his time in Ligue 1 has been challenging, with the midfielder struggling to make a significant impact. In 18 appearances for Rennes, he has managed only two goals and one assist.

The situation at Rennes quickly deteriorated for Grønbæk. Following the club’s unexpected elimination from the Coupe de France by ESTAC Troyes, he was reportedly placed in the “loft” – a term used for players no longer in the club’s plans. This development, coupled with his difficulties adapting to French football, has led Grønbæk to seek a move away from the club.

Rennes manager Jorge Sampaoli confirmed that Grønbæk has submitted a transfer request, underlining his desire to leave. Despite his struggles in France, the talented midfielder has attracted interest from several Premier League and Bundesliga clubs.
