Southampton eyeing promising coach to take over from Russell Martin
Southampton have begun their search for a new manager after parting ways with Russell Martin following a poor start to the Premier League season. According to reports, the club’s hierarchy are admirers of Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl as a potential replacement.
Martin was dismissed after Southampton’s 5-0 defeat to Tottenham left them with just one win from 16 league games. The club released a statement thanking Martin for his efforts but acknowledging the need for urgent improvement in results.
The 35-year-old Rohl has impressed in his first managerial role at Sheffield Wednesday since taking charge in October 2023. He has rejuvenated the team and put them in contention for a playoff spot after previously battling relegation.
Rohl previously worked as an assistant coach at Bayern Munich, with the German national team, and at Southampton under former manager Ralph Hasenhuttl. His familiarity with the club could work in his favor as Southampton look to appoint a foreign manager.
The young German coach has been described as “unbelievable” by Sheffield Wednesday player Josh Windass. In 63 games in charge, Rohl has guided Wednesday to 27 wins, 11 draws and 25 defeats across all competitions.
While Rohl is still relatively inexperienced as a head coach, his previous stint at Southampton and impressive work at Sheffield Wednesday have put him on the radar as the club searches for their next manager. His attacking style and ability to galvanize a struggling team could appeal to the Southampton board as they aim to turn their season around.
