Southampton Eye Danish Manager Kasper Hjulmand as Potential Upgrade

Following Russell Martin’s dismissal, Southampton are exploring managerial options as they fight to avoid relegation. While names like Danny Rohl and Carlos Corberan have been linked, reports suggest the Saints are also considering former Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand.

Hjulmand, who led Denmark to the Euro 2020 semi-finals, could potentially offer more than other candidates. His attacking philosophy and experience managing under pressure make him an intriguing option for Southampton.

The 52-year-old Danish coach has a strong track record, having guided FC Nordsjælland to their first Danish Superliga title in 2012. He also has more total victories as a manager compared to Corberan and Martin.

Hjulmand’s possession-based attacking style could suit Southampton well, as they’ve averaged 53% possession this season despite struggling. His teams have scored 560 goals under his management, highlighting his offensive mindset.

While Corberan might offer defensive stability, Hjulmand represents a bold choice that could reinvigorate Southampton’s attack. Former player Simon Kjaer has praised Hjulmand as a “fantastic coach.”

If Southampton opt for Hjulmand, it would be a gamble on his ability to translate international success to the Premier League relegation battle. However, his tactical approach and winning experience make him an intriguing candidate as the Saints look to turn their season around.
