Southampton considering attacking 4-3-3 manager with 147 career wins
Southampton are exploring options to replace recently dismissed manager Russell Martin. The club is reportedly interested in Kasper Hjulmand, who favors an attacking 4-3-3 formation and has achieved 147 victories throughout his managerial career.
The Saints parted ways with Martin following a 5-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, which left the team at the bottom of the table with just one win in 16 matches. Southampton are now nine points from safety and seeking new leadership to turn their season around.
Hjulmand, 52, is currently without a club after stepping down as Denmark’s national team manager earlier this year. He led Denmark to the Euro 2020 semi-finals and qualification for the 2022 World Cup during his tenure from 2020 to 2023.
The Danish coach has experience managing FC Nordsjælland in Denmark and Mainz in Germany’s Bundesliga. While he has never managed in England before, Hjulmand is reportedly open to taking on a Premier League role.
Southampton have apparently had Hjulmand on their radar for some time, having considered him for the managerial position previously. The club is focusing on out-of-work foreign coaches to avoid paying compensation.
However, Southampton may face competition for Hjulmand’s services, as West Ham United are also said to be considering him as a potential replacement for Julen Lopetegui.
Whoever takes the Southampton job will face a significant challenge, with the team lacking confidence and already in a precarious position near the bottom of the table. The new manager will need to quickly implement changes to give the Saints a chance at avoiding relegation this season.
