Serie A League Elects New President: Simonelli Takes Over from Casini

The Italian Serie A league has officially appointed a new President. Azio Maria Simonelli will succeed Lorenzo Casini in leading the top-flight football organization.

The election took place during a Lega Serie A assembly on Friday, following an initial round of voting on December 9. Simonelli secured 14 votes in total, surpassing the support received by his recent predecessors.

Simonelli brings a diverse background to the role. He holds a degree in economics from the University of Perugia and has extensive experience in accounting and law. Currently, he manages the Simonelli Associates law firm and serves as chair of the board of auditors for Mediaset Italia.

Notably, Simonelli previously worked as an accountant for the late Silvio Berlusconi. He has also twice attempted to become President of Serie B, the second-tier Italian league, in 2013 and 2021.

This appointment marks a significant change in leadership for Italian football’s top division. Simonelli’s expertise in finance and law may prove valuable as the league navigates future challenges and opportunities.
