Roma’s Strategy Without Dybala: Exploring Tactical Options

AS Roma finds themselves in a precarious position, just two points above the relegation zone. Adding to their concerns is the uncertain future of star player Paulo Dybala. With his contract expiring in June and no signs of renewal, the Italian club must consider their options moving forward.

Manager Claudio Ranieri has addressed the possibility of Dybala’s departure, stating, “If he doesn’t want to stay and there’s an opportunity elsewhere, we must accept it. I only want players who are committed to being here. However, I haven’t sensed any discomfort from Dybala.”

Should Dybala leave, Roma could maintain their current 3-4-2-1 formation. This setup would likely see increased opportunities for Soulé and Baldanzi in the attacking midfield roles. Soulé, in particular, was brought in as a potential replacement for Dybala, who nearly moved to Saudi Arabia last summer.

Roma’s tactical flexibility allows them to adapt without drastically altering their system. The focus would shift to maximizing the talents of their remaining attackers and potentially adjusting their pressing and buildup play to compensate for Dybala’s absence.

Regarding Dybala’s contract situation, there is an automatic renewal clause that will extend his deal until June 2026 if he plays at least 45 minutes in 55% of Roma’s matches this season. Should this clause activate, Dybala’s salary would increase to €9 million net per season, including bonuses.

As Roma navigates this challenging period, their ability to adapt tactically and make the most of their squad depth will be crucial in climbing the Serie A table, with or without their Argentine talisman.
