Romanian Businessman Dan Sucu Reportedly Close to Acquiring Genoa Football Club
Recent reports from Romania have confirmed that a wealthy Eastern European businessman is on the verge of purchasing Genoa Cricket and Football Club, Italy’s oldest football club. Contrary to earlier speculation, the potential buyer is not former tennis player and billionaire Ion Tiriac, but rather his associate, Dan Sucu.
According to Romania’s leading sports newspaper, Gazeta Sporturilor, the Genoa club is set to be acquired by Sucu, who currently owns Rapid Bucharest. Sucu is believed to be the mysterious investor behind the €40 million capital increase approved by Genoa’s shareholders last Saturday. The report suggests that Sucu plans to contribute half of this amount, with the remaining portion likely coming from a partner, possibly Florin Talpeș, CEO and co-founder of cybersecurity firm Bitdefender.
Former Romanian national team defender Răzvan Raț, now working as a financial consultant, is said to be playing a crucial role in facilitating the takeover. Raț was also instrumental in Radu Dragusin’s transfer to Genoa in the summer of 2022.
The Bucharest-based newspaper further claims that the acquisition could be officially announced before Christmas, marking a significant change in ownership for the historic Italian club.
