Rennes Nears Deal for Lens Goalkeeper Brice Samba
Rennes are on the verge of acquiring French international goalkeeper Brice Samba from RC Lens. The two clubs have reportedly reached an agreement in principle for the transfer of the 30-year-old shot-stopper.
This potential signing comes as Rennes looks to bolster their squad following a disappointing start to their Ligue 1 campaign. The Brittany club has been targeting current and former Lens players, with reports also suggesting a move for midfielder Seko Fofana.
Rennes president Arnaud Pouille, formerly the CEO of Lens, appears to be orchestrating a significant Ligue 1 transfer. Samba, known for his consistent performances, is considered one of the top goalkeepers in the league. However, he seems to have become disillusioned with Lens’ new sporting policy, which aims to reduce wages and sell key players to balance the books.
The transfer fee is expected to exceed €14 million, a considerable sum for a goalkeeper of Samba’s age. If the deal goes through, Samba would sign a long-term contract with Rennes, potentially keeping him at the club until 2029.
This move addresses Rennes’ need for a new goalkeeper, as veteran Steve Mandanda approaches the end of his contract. It would mark the second time in Mandanda’s career that he has been replaced by a younger keeper under the management of Jorge Sampaoli.
