Real Madrid Begins Presidential Election Process
Real Madrid has officially launched its presidential election process, set to begin on Tuesday, January 7th. The club aims to determine its new president before the end of the month. The last election, held in 2021, saw Florentino Perez emerge victorious, and all signs point to a similar outcome this time.
Once the process opens, there will be a 10-day window for potential candidates to submit their applications. However, if Florentino Perez remains the sole candidate, as is widely anticipated, he will be immediately reinstated as president.
Candidacy Requirements
To be eligible for the Real Madrid presidency, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Spanish citizenship
- At least 20 years of club membership
- Ability to provide a financial guarantee equivalent to 15% of the club’s total budget (currently around 163 million euros based on a 1073 million euro budget)
Real Madrid’s election process differs from other clubs. The incumbent president is not required to resign to seek re-election, which significantly shortens the electoral timeline to less than a month. In the absence of other candidates, the process could conclude within two weeks.
Florentino Perez: The Likely Sole Candidate
Barring any unexpected developments, Florentino Perez is poised to be the only presidential candidate. As per club rules, he need not step down to run again. If no other candidates emerge, Perez will be officially proclaimed as Real Madrid’s president for another four-year term once the electoral process concludes.
