Ranieri Surprised by Roma Derby Return, Views Lazio as Favorites
Claudio Ranieri has expressed his surprise at finding himself once again at the helm of Roma for another Derby della Capitale. The veteran coach admits he did not anticipate returning to lead the Giallorossi in this fierce rivalry match against Lazio.
Speaking ahead of the upcoming derby, Ranieri acknowledged Lazio’s strong position this season, stating, “They are the favorites given their 15-point advantage over us in the standings. This reflects their superior start to the campaign and current form.”
Ranieri emphasized the unique nature of derby matches, noting that they often defy conventional logic. However, he praised Lazio’s performance, highlighting their offensive capabilities and synchronized play. “We’ll need an exceptional performance from every player to compete,” Ranieri asserted.
The Roma coach also commended his Lazio counterpart, Marco Baroni, for his successful journey from lower-level coaching to achieving impressive results in both Serie A and Europa League in his debut season with Lazio.
Regarding Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini, Ranieri confirmed the player is facing challenges, partly due to assuming excessive responsibilities. Pellegrini has not played at home since October, following a toxic atmosphere at the Olimpico where fans unfairly blamed him for Daniele De Rossi’s dismissal.
As Roma prepares for this crucial match, Ranieri remains focused on gradually improving the team’s performance, stating, “We’re making progress, but haven’t yet reached our full potential. I’m eagerly awaiting that moment.”
