Rafael Del Amo Takes Helm of Spanish Football Federation
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has announced the election of Rafael Del Amo as its new president. Del Amo secured the position with overwhelming support, receiving 90 votes out of 138 assembly members. His term will run until 2028, marking a significant change in leadership for Spanish football.
Del Amo, who previously served as vice-president of the organization, steps into the role following a period of controversy surrounding the federation’s leadership. He replaces Pedro Rocha, who was suspended for two years last summer amid a series of events that shook Spanish football.
The change in leadership comes in the wake of several high-profile incidents, including the dismissal of RFEF’s general secretary Andreu Camps. This decision was prompted by demands from the Spanish women’s national team players for organizational changes following an incident involving former RFEF president Luis Rubiales.
Rubiales faced severe consequences after his inappropriate behavior during the 2023 Women’s World Cup victory ceremony, where he kissed player Jennifer Hermoso without consent. This action led to criminal charges and a three-year ban from football-related activities imposed by FIFA.
As Del Amo takes office, he faces the challenge of restoring stability and credibility to Spanish football administration after a tumultuous period that has drawn international attention and criticism.
