Norwegian Coach Eirik Horneland Takes Helm at Saint-Etienne
AS Saint-Etienne has unveiled Eirik Horneland as their new head coach, marking a significant change in leadership for the struggling Ligue 1 side. The 49-year-old Norwegian tactician steps in to replace Olivier Dall’Oglio, whose tenure was cut short due to a string of poor results that left the club languishing in 16th place.
Horneland, who recently resigned from his position at SK Brann, has committed to Saint-Etienne until 2027, with an option for an additional year. This move represents a bold step for both the coach and the club, as Horneland embarks on his first venture into French football.
The new appointment brings a fresh perspective to Les Verts, with Horneland’s successful track record in Norway, including leading SK Brann to the Norwegian First Division title in 2022, earning him the Coach of the Year accolade. He will be joined by Hassan El Fakiri as his deputy head coach.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Horneland stated, “It’s a tremendous honor to join a prestigious club like AS Saint-Étienne, not only for its rich history but also for its profound impact on the city and the passion it ignites among fans.”
Saint-Etienne’s president, Ivan Gazidis, praised Horneland’s appointment, describing him as “a highly skilled and respected coach who will contribute significantly to establishing a performance-driven culture and a distinctive playing style.”
As Horneland takes the reins, all eyes will be on Saint-Etienne to see if the Norwegian can steer the club away from relegation danger and restore its former glory in French football.
