Newcastle scouts observe promising Sunderland defender
Newcastle United have reportedly scouted Sunderland defender Daniel Ballard ahead of the January transfer window, according to recent reports. However, the Magpies face stiff competition for the 25-year-old’s signature from several other Premier League clubs.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is looking to bolster his defensive options, with center-back being identified as a priority position to strengthen. While the club has been linked with continental targets like Lens’ Abdukodir Khusanov and Barcelona’s Eric Garcia, they are also exploring options closer to home.
Ballard has impressed for Sunderland in the Championship this season, establishing himself as a key player in their promotion push. His performances have caught the eye of multiple top-flight clubs, with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Aston Villa, Brighton, Crystal Palace and Fulham all sending scouts to watch the Northern Ireland international.
However, a potential move to Newcastle seems unlikely given the fierce rivalry between the two North East clubs. Sunderland would be extremely reluctant to sell one of their prized assets to their local rivals, especially while chasing promotion to the Premier League.
With such strong competition for Ballard’s signature and the complications of dealing with Sunderland, Newcastle may be better served focusing on other defensive targets that would be easier to acquire in the January window. The club’s recruitment team will continue to evaluate options as they look to strengthen Howe’s squad for the second half of the season.
