Neil El Aynaoui: Lens’ Unexpected Midfield Star
In the summer of 2023, RC Lens made several midfield acquisitions, including the highly-touted Andy Diouf and experienced Nampalys Mendy. However, it was the relatively unknown Neil El Aynaoui, signed for a mere €600,000 from AS Nancy, who emerged as the standout performer in Franck Haise’s squad.
El Aynaoui, a Morocco youth international, seamlessly transitioned from the French third tier to the Champions League. His no-nonsense style, characterized by tireless work rate and intense pressing, compensated for his occasional technical limitations. The midfielder’s ability to adapt to top-flight football was particularly impressive, highlighting his mental fortitude.
El Aynaoui’s performances caught the attention of AS Monaco, who agreed to a €20 million transfer. However, the deal fell through due to concerns about the player’s knee during the medical examination. Despite this setback, El Aynaoui remained with Lens without undergoing surgery.
Unfortunately, injuries have hampered El Aynaoui’s progress in the current season. A muscle tear in September, combined with his earlier knee issues, has limited him to just two starts in Ligue 1. As he works to regain fitness and form, El Aynaoui faces the challenge of re-establishing himself in Will Still’s midfield and building upon his breakthrough season.
