Meret: Napoli Aims to Maintain League-Leading Position

Following Napoli’s narrow 2-1 win against Genoa, goalkeeper Alex Meret acknowledged the match’s contrasting halves and expressed the team’s determination to retain their top spot in Serie A.

Napoli dominated the opening period, securing a 2-0 lead within 23 minutes through headers from Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa and Amir Rrahmani. However, Genoa mounted a strong comeback after the break, with Andrea Pinamonti reducing the deficit and putting pressure on the visitors.

Meret reflected on the game, stating, “It was truly a tale of two halves. Genoa adopted a cautious approach initially, allowing us to control possession and create numerous opportunities. After halftime, they became much more aggressive, pressing us intensely and causing significant problems. We showed great resilience to secure this crucial victory.”

The result temporarily places Napoli at the summit of Serie A, pending upcoming matches for their rivals. Meret emphasized the importance of maintaining their position, saying, “Every match is critical at this stage. We need to keep pace with our competitors as the standings remain tight. Our goal is to stay among the frontrunners, continually improve, and minimize our mistakes.”

Napoli’s current situation marks a significant improvement from last season, with the team now 11 points better off than at the same stage in 2023. However, they have now gone three consecutive Serie A matches without a clean sheet, extending to four games when including their Coppa Italia elimination by Lazio.
