McTominay Discusses His Move from Manchester United to Napoli
Scottish midfielder Scott McTominay has opened up about his recent transfer from Manchester United to Napoli. The 27-year-old completed a €30.5 million move to the Italian club last summer.
In an interview with BBC Scotland, McTominay described the decision to join Napoli as “quite straightforward” despite it being a significant career move. He cited the passionate fans, the coach, the players, and the opportunity as key factors in his choice.
“I saw an opportunity and I took it without looking back,” McTominay stated. “Once I set my mind to something, there’s no holding me back.”
The midfielder also revealed details of his conversation with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag before the transfer. McTominay explained that it was a mutual decision, with financial fair play considerations playing a role from the club’s perspective.
“I told Ten Hag, ‘Listen, it’s my career, I am here to push myself on,'” McTominay recounted. “In this situation, I have to look out for myself and follow my gut feeling about what I want to do in my career.”
Since joining Napoli, McTominay has made an impressive impact, scoring three goals and providing three assists in 13 Serie A matches. His arrival even prompted manager Antonio Conte to switch to a four-man defense after years of using a three-at-the-back system.
McTominay expressed his happiness with the move, praising his new teammates and the Napoli fans. He also mentioned the benefit of playing alongside fellow Scotland international Billy Gilmour, who joined Napoli in the same transfer window.
The midfielder has signed a contract with Napoli until June 2028. His new team currently sits second in the Serie A table, just two points behind leaders Atalanta.
