Matvei Safonov Makes Strong Case for PSG’s Number One Goalkeeper Spot
Since joining Paris Saint-Germain last summer, 25-year-old Russian goalkeeper Matvei Safonov has been openly challenging Gianluigi Donnarumma for the starting position. Donnarumma’s inconsistent performances last season prompted PSG to invest €20 million in Safonov, viewing him as a potential replacement rather than just a backup.
Donnarumma’s struggles continued this season, particularly in Champions League matches. Safonov capitalized on his opportunities, including a start against Bayern Munich. When Donnarumma suffered an injury during a recent match against AS Monaco, Safonov stepped in for the Coupe de France game against RC Lens.
Safonov excelled in the Lens match, making two crucial saves during the penalty shootout and earning the Man of the Match award. Despite his modesty in post-game interviews, Safonov’s performance strengthened his case for more playing time.
The Russian goalkeeper spoke about his adaptation to PSG, noting the higher level of play and his initial struggles with the pace of training. He now feels fully prepared to compete for the starting position.
Donnarumma may return to training before the Trophée des Champions on January 5th. The Italian keeper will be eager to reclaim his spot and prevent Safonov from further challenging his status as PSG’s primary goalkeeper.
As the competition intensifies, PSG’s coaching staff faces a tough decision in choosing their starting goalkeeper for upcoming crucial matches.
