Massimo Oddo: Reflections on Lazio Career and Departure to AC Milan
Massimo Oddo, former Lazio captain and 2006 World Cup winner, recently shared his experiences at the Roman club in an interview with Radio Serie A. Oddo, who joined Lazio in 2002 and left for AC Milan in 2007, provided insights into his time with the Biancocelesti.
Oddo recalled joining a star-studded Lazio team in 2002, featuring players like Nesta, Crespo, and Mihajlovic. He fondly remembered winning the Coppa Italia in his first season. However, the club soon faced financial difficulties, risking bankruptcy. Oddo, along with teammates like Peruzzi and Cesar, stayed loyal during this challenging period.
The defender spoke about the 2005 season when Lazio narrowly avoided relegation. He also mentioned the satisfaction of helping the team qualify for the Champions League in his final season. Oddo emphasized the strong bond he developed with the club and its fans, eventually becoming captain.
Regarding his departure, Oddo revealed, “Before leaving, I had proposed to Lotito to renew my contract and stay for life. However, due to particular economic needs, I was forced to leave. I felt a weight on my shoulders, especially as captain. Lazio’s Champions League qualification at the end of the season somewhat lifted this heaviness I felt.”
Oddo’s transfer to AC Milan in 2007 was described as an “obligatory farewell,” highlighting the financial constraints Lazio faced at the time. Despite his desire to remain with the club, circumstances led to his move to the Rossoneri, where he went on to win the Champions League in his first season.
