Marshall Munetsi: The Unsung Hero Powering Reims’ Performance
Since joining Reims, Marshall Munetsi has proven himself to be an invaluable asset to the club. While he may not possess the creative flair of Junya Ito or the attacking prowess of Keito Nakamura, the Zimbabwean midfielder’s relentless work rate has been instrumental in keeping the team competitive in Ligue 1 since the 2018-19 season.
Munetsi’s ability to regain possession effectively allows Ito and Nakamura to shine on the wings. This season, he has won over 70 duels in the league, including at least five in the final third. Additionally, he has made more than 30 recoveries and recorded double-digit interceptions, showcasing his defensive prowess.
Although his aggressive style sometimes leads to fouls, Munetsi has maintained discipline, avoiding red cards in domestic matches since the 2020-21 season. His precise timing and improved positioning have resulted in more fouls being committed against him than by him.
Munetsi’s Growing Offensive Contribution
While defense remains his forte, Munetsi has also demonstrated his scoring ability, finding the net in all but one of his Ligue 1 seasons. In the 2024-25 campaign, he has recorded over 40 touches in the opposition’s box and reached double figures in chance creation. Though his pass accuracy could improve, it has rarely hindered the team’s performance this season.
Considering his all-around skillset, Munetsi may well be Reims’ most versatile player. His ability to cover ground, excel defensively, and contribute to transitions makes him a vital component of Luka Elsner’s tactical setup at Stade Auguste-Delaune and a key factor in the team’s success.
