Marseille’s Quentin Merlin Attracts Attention from French National Team Coach

Quentin Merlin, the 22-year-old left-back for Olympique de Marseille, has been making waves with his performances this season. The young defender’s efforts have not gone unnoticed, as France national team manager Didier Deschamps has reportedly taken an interest in the player.

Since joining Marseille from FC Nantes just under a year ago, Merlin has quickly established himself as the first-choice left-back at the Vélodrome. This season, he has made eight appearances, contributing one goal and one assist. His recent goal against Lille OSC marked his first for the club.

Deschamps is said to be impressed by Merlin’s versatility and ability to play in both four-man and five-man defensive systems. The competition for the left-back position in the French national team is not as fierce as in other areas, with the Hernández brothers, Lucas Digne, and Ferland Mendy being the primary contenders.

While no immediate call-up is guaranteed, Deschamps is reportedly monitoring Merlin’s progress with a view to potentially including him in future national team squads. This attention from the national team coach represents a significant milestone in the young defender’s career and could pave the way for future opportunities at the international level.
