Marseille striker Neal Maupay takes aim at Everton with controversial comment
French footballer Neal Maupay, known for his provocative behavior both on and off the pitch, recently made headlines with a controversial social media post targeting his parent club, Everton. The 28-year-old striker, currently on loan at Olympique de Marseille, took to social media following Everton’s 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, stating, “Whenever I’m feeling down, I just check Everton’s score and it makes me smile.”
This inflammatory remark has raised eyebrows, especially considering Maupay remains under contract with Everton until 2026. The forward, who has struggled to make an impact at the Merseyside club with just one goal in 31 appearances, is currently experiencing a slight improvement in form at Marseille, having scored twice in 12 games.
Maupay’s reputation for antagonizing opponents is well-documented, with incidents such as mocking James Maddison’s goal celebration adding to his image as a provocateur. In a recent interview, Maupay even admitted, “I was perhaps born to be a nuisance.”
Marseille has the option to make Maupay’s loan move permanent for approximately €5 million. However, following this latest controversy, it seems highly unlikely that the French striker will ever don an Everton shirt again, as his actions appear to have severely damaged his relationship with the club.
