Marseille Manager De Zerbi Backs Ligue 1 Quality, Urges Better Promotion
Roberto De Zerbi, the manager of Olympique de Marseille, has come to the defense of Ligue 1 while criticizing the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) for inadequate promotion of the league. The Italian coach, who has had a promising start in French football, expressed his views during a press conference ahead of Marseille’s match against Le Havre.
De Zerbi strongly disagreed with recent comments made by Cristiano Ronaldo, who suggested that the Saudi Pro League surpasses Ligue 1 in quality. The Marseille manager stated, “Ligue 1 is more competitive than many outside France realize. We have excellent players and coaches, packed stadiums, and fantastic atmospheres.”
However, De Zerbi pointed out the LFP’s shortcomings in marketing the league effectively. He noted the lack of Ligue 1 broadcasts in Italy, saying, “The league may not be promoted as well as the Premier League, Serie A, La Liga, or Bundesliga. I’m unsure if it’s a communication or management issue, but it’s unfortunate that a football-loving country like France doesn’t receive proper recognition for its league.”
De Zerbi’s Marseille currently holds second place in Ligue 1, despite Paris Saint-Germain’s substantial lead. His team has impressed with nine victories, three draws, and three losses, establishing themselves as one of the most entertaining sides to watch in the French top flight.
