Marotta on Simonelli’s Election: “There’s a Desire for Renewal, But We’re Not Talking About North-South Division”
Inter Milan CEO and Serie A board member Giuseppe Marotta shared his thoughts on the recent election of Ezio Simonelli as the new president of Serie A. Speaking after the League Assembly, Marotta emphasized the importance of this change for the future of Italian football.
“The most significant outcome is that we’ve elected a new president, Ezio Simonelli,” Marotta stated. “His appointment will be officially confirmed after verifying eligibility requirements, as is standard procedure. The key point here is renewal, which doesn’t diminish Lorenzo Casini’s contributions but reflects the desires of 14 clubs.”
Marotta stressed that this change isn’t about creating division within the league. “We aim to unite all clubs, including those who voted differently. Our goal is to establish a method that gives proper recognition to an industrial sector that deserves better treatment than it currently receives.”
When asked about Simonelli’s eligibility, Marotta expressed confidence: “Yes, Simonelli meets the candidacy requirements.”
Addressing the six clubs that voted differently, Marotta said, “Debate is part of the democratic process. This renewal isn’t about individualism or personal issues. Everyone’s contribution is valuable in ensuring this moment is recognized for what it is. The football world is crucial, and we’re highlighting that we’re not acknowledged for our true worth.”
Marotta dismissed suggestions of a power shift towards Northern Italy: “We’re not making geopolitical arguments. The twenty teams represent all of Italy, which is one united country.”
Regarding priorities, Marotta concluded, “We need to come together and develop a strategy to achieve further improvements compared to the recent past.”
