Marco Asensio at PSG: Adapting to New Realities in 2025

When Marco Asensio joined Paris Saint-Germain from Real Madrid in early 2023, expectations were high. As Luis Enrique’s second signing, Asensio seemed poised to play a crucial role in the team’s new tactical approach. His experience as a false nine under Enrique during Spain’s 2022 World Cup campaign suggested he would be a key figure in PSG’s evolving strategy.

However, Asensio’s journey at PSG has been far from smooth. An early foot injury sidelined him for much of the 2023/24 season, forcing him to adapt to a changed team dynamic upon his return. Initially seen as a tactical cornerstone, Asensio found himself needing to fit into an established system.

The 2024/25 season brought new opportunities for Asensio, particularly with Kylian Mbappé’s departure to Real Madrid and Gonçalo Ramos’s injury. This thrust Asensio back into the false nine role in a strikerless formation. While PSG’s domestic performance improved, with the team leading the league and boasting the best attack, Asensio’s direct goal contributions remained modest.

Asensio’s value to the team lies more in his ability to create fluidity and facilitate scoring opportunities across the pitch. However, his limited involvement in PSG’s Champions League campaign raises questions about his role in high-stakes matches.

Looking ahead to 2025, Asensio’s position at PSG appears uncertain. With Ramos’s expected return, competition for the striking positions will intensify. Asensio’s adaptability and understanding of Enrique’s system may be crucial in maintaining his relevance in the squad.

As PSG continues to evolve, Asensio’s role may shift further. His ability to adjust to these changes and contribute effectively will likely determine his future at the club. The coming year will be pivotal for Asensio as he seeks to solidify his place in PSG’s long-term plans.
