Manchester United Eye Leeds Goalkeeper Meslier as Potential Onana Replacement
Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier as they look to strengthen their options between the posts. The Red Devils have endured a difficult start to the season, currently sitting 13th in the Premier League table after 17 matches.
New manager Ruben Amorim faces a significant challenge to turn the club’s fortunes around, with defensive frailties a particular concern. United have conceded 22 goals in the league already this campaign, with summer signing Andre Onana failing to impress since his £47.2 million move from Inter Milan.
Meslier, who joined Leeds for just £5 million in 2020, has been in superb form for the Championship side this season. The 24-year-old Frenchman has kept 12 clean sheets in 22 appearances, conceding just 15 goals. His save percentage of 71% and pass completion rate of 80% both surpass Onana’s figures in those categories.
While no fee has been mentioned for Meslier’s services, his signing could provide strong competition for Onana and potentially solve United’s goalkeeping issues. The Leeds stopper’s ability with the ball at his feet could also suit Amorim’s possession-based style of play.
As United look to progress after years of underperformance, strengthening key positions like goalkeeper will be crucial. Meslier represents an intriguing option who could challenge Onana for the number one spot and improve United’s defensive solidity.
