Manchester City May Have Found John Stones’ Replacement in Promising Academy Talent

Manchester City’s recent poor form has put their season in jeopardy. Following a 2-1 loss to Manchester United, City have now lost 5 of their last 7 league matches and trail Liverpool by 11 points in the Premier League standings.

This downturn is a stark contrast to their dominant performances in recent years, including four consecutive Premier League titles and their first Champions League trophy in 2023. While several players have underperformed, City’s defensive vulnerabilities have been particularly glaring.

The team has conceded 23 goals in the league so far this season. Key defenders like Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias have missed significant time due to injuries. However, England international John Stones has notably struggled when available, making just 7 appearances and falling short of his usual standards.

Stones’ poor form is reflected in declining defensive stats across tackles, interceptions, blocks, and aerial duels won compared to previous seasons. His passing accuracy and progressive passes have also dropped off.

Fortunately for City, they may have an in-house solution in 16-year-old academy prospect Stephen Mfuni. Football scout Jacek Kulig has described Mfuni as “one of the most talented teenage center backs in world football.”

Despite his young age, Mfuni has already featured 3 times for City’s Premier League 2 side. He recently earned praise for his performance in a 3-0 UEFA Youth League victory over Sparta Prague.

Mfuni can play as either a left or right center back. His aerial ability and skills on the ball have been highlighted as key attributes that could allow him to eventually replace Stones in City’s backline.

Rather than spending big in the transfer market, it appears manager Pep Guardiola may have a homegrown solution to shore up City’s leaky defense in the form of the highly-rated Mfuni.
