Locatelli’s New Role in Juventus: Adapting to Defensive Challenges
Juventus is facing a shortage of central defenders, prompting the club to seek reinforcements in the upcoming January transfer window. Cristiano Giuntoli, the club’s sporting director, hinted at their plans before the Coppa Italia match against Cagliari, stating, “Targets? Let’s start with one.” However, it’s becoming clear that at least two defensive additions are needed.
Manager Thiago Motta is grappling with the long-term absences of Bremer and Cabal due to injuries, while uncertainty surrounds Danilo’s future. These circumstances have forced the coach to explore creative solutions to bolster the team’s defensive lineup.
In a notable tactical shift during the Coppa Italia round of 16 match against Cagliari, Motta experimented with a new defensive setup. He deployed Manuel Locatelli as a center-back in a four-man defense, partnering him with Kalulu, while Savona played at right-back and McKennie, another midfielder, filled in at left-back.
Despite these temporary fixes, Juventus is actively pursuing defensive reinforcements. Giuntoli has begun preliminary discussions with potential targets. Among the favored candidates is Hancko, formerly of Fiorentina and currently playing for Feyenoord. Other players on Juventus’ radar include Ismajli from Empoli, who has had a strong start to the season, Kiwior from Arsenal (previously linked with Juventus during his time at Spezia), and Skriniar, who is expected to leave PSG in January and could make a return to Italian football.
As the transfer window approaches, Juventus fans eagerly await news of defensive signings that could strengthen the team’s backline and support their campaign in Serie A and other competitions.
