Liverpool may regret selling Solanke, now worth more than Jota
Liverpool’s recent Premier League draws have allowed Chelsea to close the gap, changing the narrative around the Reds’ dominance. While still two points clear with a game in hand, Liverpool need to bounce back after dropping points at home to Fulham.
New manager Arne Slot has implemented a completely new tactical approach since replacing Jurgen Klopp in the summer. Despite recent setbacks, Liverpool showed title-winning resilience to fight back for a draw against Fulham with 10 men.
The return of Diogo Jota proved crucial, with the Portuguese forward scoring off the bench after missing 11 matches through injury. Jota has been an excellent servant since joining in 2020, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most clinical finishers.
However, Jota’s injury issues have limited his impact at times. His goalscoring ability is exceptional when fit, but he has missed significant portions of most seasons at Anfield.
Meanwhile, former Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke has developed into one of the league’s most interesting forwards at Tottenham. Described as a “pressing monster”, Solanke combines energy, power and finishing ability.
Liverpool sold Solanke to Bournemouth for £19m in 2019 after he scored just once in 27 appearances. While the fee seemed good business at the time, Solanke is now valued at around £47m compared to £31m for Jota.
With Darwin Nunez still inconsistent, Liverpool may wish they had kept hold of Solanke to provide a more robust and refined option up front. His all-round game and goalscoring record suggest he could have been an ideal fit for Slot’s system.
