Liverpool Consider £40M Kerkez as Potential Robertson Successor
Liverpool’s impressive start under new manager Arne Slot has positioned them as Premier League title favorites. However, recent draws against Newcastle and Fulham have slightly dented their momentum. With the January transfer window approaching, strengthening the left-back position appears to be a priority for the club.
Andy Robertson has been a key player for Liverpool since joining from Hull City in 2017 for just £10 million. He has made over 300 appearances and helped the club win major trophies. However, at 30 years old, Robertson’s performances have declined somewhat this season as he adjusts to Slot’s system.
Liverpool are reportedly interested in Bournemouth’s 21-year-old left-back Milos Kerkez as a potential long-term replacement. The Hungarian international only joined Bournemouth last summer for £15.5 million but has quickly adapted to the Premier League.
Kerkez’s attacking output and defensive statistics compare favorably to Robertson’s this season. The youngster has completed 70% of his dribbles and won 65% of ground duels, compared to just 33% and 51% respectively for Robertson. His energy and athleticism seem well-suited to Slot’s high-intensity style of play.
While Robertson remains an important figure in the dressing room and one of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s closest friends, Liverpool may need to phase him out of the starting lineup to secure future success. Signing Kerkez for a reported £40 million fee could provide strong competition and eventually succeed Robertson as first-choice left-back.
The potential arrival of Kerkez would continue Liverpool’s recent trend of recruiting young talent to refresh their squad. His signing could be particularly crucial if Alexander-Arnold departs, with Real Madrid reportedly interested in the right-back whose contract expires in 2025.
While Robertson has been a fantastic servant for Liverpool, the club must look to the future. In Kerkez, they may have identified the ideal candidate to eventually fill the Scotsman’s boots and maintain their status as Premier League contenders for years to come.
