Lazio’s Midfield Dilemma: Vecino’s Extended Absence Sparks Transfer Considerations

Lazio has encountered a significant setback with Matias Vecino’s injury prognosis worsening. Recent medical evaluations have revealed that the midfielder’s muscular problem, initially thought to be minor, has escalated to a more severe condition. The injury now falls between grade two and three, potentially affecting the tendon. This development means Vecino could be sidelined for an additional six to eight weeks.

The prolonged absence of Vecino, who has already missed five matches, is forcing coach Marco Baroni and the club’s management to reassess their strategies both on and off the field. The central midfield is particularly strained, with Rovella and Guendouzi shouldering extra responsibilities and Dele-Bashiru as the sole reliable alternative.

Castrovilli, recently returned from knee surgery, hasn’t yet met the coach’s expectations for regular rotation. The club had even considered a mutual contract termination in January to free up a roster spot. However, this situation has now changed, with Baroni likely to integrate Castrovilli more into the team’s rotation.

As a stopgap measure, the club is considering reintegrating one of their surplus players. With Akpa Akpro potentially moving to Monza, Basic could step in to provide support until reinforcements arrive from the transfer market.

Lazio had already planned to bring in at least one new player during the winter transfer window to continue the team’s renewal and rejuvenation process initiated in the summer. Previous inquiries were made about Belahyane from Hellas Verona and Tahirovic from Ajax. However, the current priority seems to be finding a dynamic midfielder similar to Vecino.

Recent rumors have linked Lazio with Fazzini from Empoli and Casadei from Chelsea. While it’s almost certain that a new signing will be made, the specific player remains uncertain. The club is actively working to address their midfield concerns and maintain their competitive edge in the league.
