Lazio President Lotito: Humbling Defeat Against Inter Will Benefit the Team

Lazio’s 6-0 loss to Inter Milan at the Olimpico stadium is not causing panic within the club. President Claudio Lotito addressed the defeat, stating, “Not all setbacks are detrimental.” This result marks the worst home defeat in Lazio’s history and the most significant loss during Lotito’s tenure. However, the club’s owner believes that “an occasional dose of humility is always beneficial.”

Lotito emphasized the need to stay grounded, saying, “Yesterday’s match was unprecedented. We lost two central defenders early on, despite Lazio putting Inter under significant pressure in the first 35 minutes. This is the most resounding defeat I’ve experienced in twenty years. The team lost cohesion, but this should serve as an opportunity for reflection and to bring everyone back down to earth.”

Regarding potential transfers, Lotito cautioned against hasty decisions: “One doesn’t go to the supermarket with a ‘buy one, get two free’ mentality. That’s a mistake. It would mean undervaluing the quality of our current players. Yesterday was an isolated incident, not a result of lacking or having certain players. We should focus on maximizing the potential of our existing squad and enabling them to perform at their best. They have quality, as demonstrated until now.”

Lotito also commented on the manager Baroni’s role: “Baroni rightly took responsibility; that’s his job. He chooses the tactical setup, not me. Facing Inter under those circumstances, without some key players available, certainly didn’t help. Perhaps changing the formation would have been more beneficial, but yesterday’s match was an anomaly. We shouldn’t overthink it. Let’s focus on recovery and see how the team responds in the next game.”
