Lazio Coach Baroni: “I Take Responsibility for the Defeat, Hope It’s Just a Bump in the Road”

Lazio suffered a humiliating 6-0 defeat at home to Inter Milan in the 16th round of Serie A. The match, which was initially competitive, saw Lazio collapse in the second half.

Following the game, Lazio’s head coach Marco Baroni spoke to the media, attempting to explain the unexpected thrashing:

“I’m disappointed for the team and fans, and I take full responsibility for this loss. We played well for 40 minutes, but it wasn’t enough. The team lost cohesion and mentally crumbled. I failed to manage the emotional aspect effectively. I’ve already spoken with the squad, and now we must regroup and move forward.”

Addressing the rapid turn of events that saw Lazio concede multiple goals in quick succession, Baroni stated, “This shouldn’t happen. We can’t fall apart like that. I’m upset that we lost our composure. I take responsibility and recognize this as a setback against a strong team. We can’t allow such spaces and vulnerabilities.”

Regarding tactical choices, Baroni explained, “When we play with an offensive player between the lines, the team creates significant opportunities. There’s some fatigue, but we can’t lose our shape so dramatically. This is the first time it’s happened, especially against a team that excels at counterattacks. It’s not about 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1; we simply stretched too thin both vertically and horizontally.”

Baroni concluded by emphasizing the need to learn from this experience and ensure it doesn’t recur as Lazio continues their Serie A campaign.
