Lautaro Martinez anticipates thrilling Serie A title race between Inter and Napoli
Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez is eagerly looking forward to an exciting Serie A title race against Napoli in the 2024-25 season. The Argentine striker shared his thoughts after Inter’s recent 3-1 victory over Empoli at San Siro.
Martinez opened the scoring with a spectacular long-range effort, followed by goals from Denzel Dumfries and Marcus Thuram. The win brought Inter within three points of league leaders Napoli, though the defending champions have a game in hand.
“It’s going to be a fascinating battle,” Martinez said. “We’re just three points behind with a game still to play. As always, we need to focus on our own path and strive to improve with each passing year.”
The Inter captain admitted to feeling some frustration after their recent draw against Bologna, which he channeled into his passionate goal celebration against Empoli. “There was a bit of anger in me because we felt like we dropped two points against Bologna,” he explained.
Martinez also addressed criticism of his recent goal drought, emphasizing his commitment to continuous improvement. “Since I started playing football, I’ve always tried to look forward and aim to get better. It’s what I tell the younger players – we must all give our heart and soul on the field and in training.”
With 111 Serie A goals to his name, Martinez is now tied with Mauro Icardi as Inter’s second-highest foreign goalscorer, behind only club legend Stefano Nyers.
As Inter continues their pursuit of the Serie A title, Martinez remains focused on the challenges ahead. “We have a long path ahead of us,” he said. “We need to recover now and keep pushing forward.”
