Juric aims to implement Atalanta-inspired tactics at Southampton
Recently appointed Southampton manager Ivan Juric has expressed his intention to introduce an aggressive, high-pressing style of play at the Premier League club, modeled after the successful system employed by Atalanta under Gian Piero Gasperini.
Juric, who previously coached in Italy at clubs like Genoa, Hellas Verona and Torino, sees great potential in Southampton’s squad despite their current struggles. He believes implementing elements of Atalanta’s dynamic approach can help turn things around.
“I want our team to be very competitive and solid defensively,” Juric stated. “Over time, we’ll improve our possession and attacking play. The style I aim for is similar to Atalanta – pressing high up the pitch and playing attractive football.”
The Croatian manager learned directly under Gasperini as both a player and assistant coach. He now hopes to replicate some of Atalanta’s success at Southampton, though he acknowledges the enormity of the task ahead in avoiding relegation.
“I’m aware it will be extremely challenging,” Juric admitted. “But I’ve seen talent in this squad and believe we can perform much better. I’m optimistic we can start picking up points and do something extraordinary to stay up.”
While Southampton currently sit 8 points from safety with a -25 goal difference, Juric remains upbeat about their survival chances. He’ll look to quickly implement his high-energy tactics as the Saints aim for an improbable escape from relegation.
