Italian Sports Journalism Mourns the Loss of Gian Paolo Ormezzano
The Italian journalism community is grieving the loss of Gian Paolo Ormezzano, a prominent figure in Turin’s media landscape and a well-known supporter of Torino FC. The esteemed journalist and author passed away at the age of 89 in Turin. The news was announced by Corriere Torino, a publication he continued to contribute to until recently.
Born in Turin on September 17, 1935, Ormezzano had a distinguished career in Italian journalism. He served as the editor-in-chief of Tuttosport from 1974 to 1979, leading the sports daily for five years. Throughout his long career, Ormezzano collaborated with numerous publications, including La Stampa, where he retired in 1991, Guerin Sportivo, and most recently, Corriere Torino.
Ormezzano’s talents extended beyond print journalism. He ventured into television and radio broadcasting while also pursuing a successful career as an author. He penned numerous books about football, including a 1999 work on Torino’s legendary team, co-authored with Giorgio Tosatti.
The journalist is survived by his wife and three children, including his son Timothy, who has followed in his father’s footsteps and currently writes for Corriere della Sera.
Torino FC expressed their condolences, stating: “President Urbano Cairo and all of Torino FC extend their heartfelt sympathies to the Ormezzano family in memory of Gian Paolo Ormezzano, a giant of Italian journalism with a heart firmly rooted in Turin, where he was a pillar of the community and a lifelong, proud supporter of Torino.”
