Ipswich Town May Need to Move On from Struggling Loanee Kalvin Phillips

Despite manager Kieran McKenna’s initial excitement about signing Kalvin Phillips on loan, the midfielder has failed to live up to expectations at Ipswich Town so far this season. With Phillips struggling for playing time and form, the club may need to consider ending his loan spell early in January if things don’t improve.

Phillips has made just 7 Premier League appearances for Ipswich this season and hasn’t featured in the last 5 matches. His absence hasn’t been felt, with other midfielders like Jens Cajuste impressing in recent games. Phillips’ stats have been underwhelming, with 0 goals and 0 assists in his limited playing time.

The England international admitted he “lost the fire in his belly” after moving to Manchester City, and his loan spell at Ipswich was meant to help him rediscover his best form. However, Phillips has struggled to make an impact and break into the starting lineup consistently.

With reports of a potential return to former club Leeds United in January, the winter transfer window could provide an opportunity for Ipswich and Phillips to part ways. Unless his performances and playing time improve dramatically, ending the loan early may be the best option for all parties.

While McKenna was initially “very happy” to sign Phillips, the move hasn’t worked out as hoped. Ipswich may need to cut their losses and move on from the underperforming midfielder if he can’t turn things around quickly. Phillips’ high wages and lack of impact make his continued presence in the squad difficult to justify.
