Inter Milan’s Impressive Performance: Defensive Improvement and Financial Progress
Inter Milan continues to impress in Serie A, securing a 2-0 victory against Como at San Siro. Goals from Carlos Augusto and Thuram sealed the win for the Nerazzurri in the 17th round of the championship. This result aligns with the overall trend, as nine out of the top ten teams in the league standings secured victories, with Fiorentina being the sole exception after a 2-1 home defeat to Udinese.
Currently, the reigning Italian champions have accumulated 37 points in the league table, trailing Atalanta by 3 points and Napoli by just 1 point. However, it’s worth noting that both these teams have played one more game than Inter.
A significant turning point for Inter’s season came after their 4-4 draw against Juventus at San Siro. Prior to this match, Simone Inzaghi’s team had conceded 13 goals in 9 games. However, in the subsequent 7 Serie A fixtures, they’ve only allowed 2 goals, both at home against Napoli and Parma.
Offensively, Inter has maintained a consistent performance, scoring 21 goals and collecting 18 points in the first 9 rounds, followed by another 21 goals and 19 points in the next 7 matches. This brings their total to 37 points from 16 games, with 42 goals scored (joint-best attack in Serie A alongside Atalanta) and only 15 conceded.
In a pre-match statement, Inter’s president Marotta responded to criticisms from Milan’s owner Cardinale. Marotta highlighted two significant facts: Inter has reduced its financial losses from €245 million in the 2020/2021 season to €36 million this year, with prospects of breaking even in the next financial year ending June 2025. He also proudly noted that Inter is the only Milan-based club to have two stars on its jersey, signifying multiple league titles.
