Iñaki Williams Speaks Out on Controversial Issues in Spanish Football
Following the Spanish Supercup semifinal between Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona, striker Iñaki Williams shared his thoughts on several contentious matters affecting Spanish football. Williams didn’t hold back in his criticism of recent events and decisions.
Regarding the Spanish Sports Council (CSD) granting Barcelona a temporary reprieve to register new players, Williams expressed his surprise: “It seems the rules aren’t the same for everyone.” He echoed the sentiments of many football fans and his club’s president, Jon Uriarte Uranga, who earlier described the decision as “incredible” and “grotesque.”
Williams went on to say, “This continues to surprise us. The image of Spanish football may be tarnished because there’s a lot of division, as many things are hard to understand.”
The forward also discussed controversial moments from the match, including a disallowed goal. He questioned the decision, stating, “It seems unfair to nullify such plays when the pass trajectory would have been the same, as it was just a minute touch… but that’s football, those are the rules.”
Williams was particularly critical of holding the Supercup in Saudi Arabia: “For me, it makes no sense to play in Arabia. It’s unfortunate that football is like this now, and I find it sad.” He emphasized the impact on fans, saying, “It’s a shame that such an attractive match has to be played hundreds of kilometers away from our people and families. Despite having some supporters here, it felt like playing away from home.”
These comments from Williams highlight ongoing debates about fairness, rule application, and the commercialization of football in Spain, reflecting broader concerns within the sport.
