Guardiola May Consider Benching Haaland to Unleash De Bruyne Against Leicester
Manchester City’s recent struggles continued with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Everton, as Pep Guardiola’s side failed to capitalize on their chances. The team’s poor run of form in recent months has coincided with star striker Erling Haaland’s goal drought, having scored just three Premier League goals since late September.
With a crucial match against Leicester City on the horizon, Guardiola may need to make a bold tactical decision to jumpstart City’s attack. One option could be dropping the out-of-form Haaland to the bench and deploying Phil Foden as a false nine, with Kevin De Bruyne slotting in behind him in an attacking midfield role.
Haaland struggled mightily against Everton, managing just 22 touches and completing only 10 passes in 90 minutes while also missing a penalty. A brief spell on the bench could help the Norwegian striker regain his confidence and form.
Meanwhile, De Bruyne is returning to full fitness after missing time with a hamstring injury. The Belgian playmaker’s creativity and vision could provide the spark City’s attack has been lacking. Despite limited playing time this season, De Bruyne has still created 7 big chances and averaged 2.3 key passes per game in Premier League action.
By positioning De Bruyne just behind Foden in a false nine setup, Guardiola could maximize his star midfielder’s talents in dangerous attacking areas. While dropping Haaland would be a major decision, City desperately need a win to keep pace in the tight Champions League race.
Guardiola praised De Bruyne as “unbelievable” late last season as City clinched another league title. Now may be the time for the manager to unleash his talisman once again in hopes of getting the team back on track against Leicester City.
