Gianluigi Donnarumma: PSG’s Goalkeeper at a Crossroads

2024 proved to be a challenging year for Gianluigi Donnarumma, as his status as an elite goalkeeper came under scrutiny. Despite his early success with AC Milan and his crucial role in Italy’s Euro 2020 victory, Donnarumma’s position as PSG’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper is no longer secure.

Donnarumma’s weaknesses in ball distribution have become increasingly apparent, especially in European competitions. This issue has been highlighted under Luis Enrique’s management, which emphasizes the goalkeeper’s involvement in building play from the back. As a result, PSG acquired Matvei Safonov for €20 million, signaling potential competition for the starting position.

Upon his arrival, Safonov made it clear he was not content with a backup role, stating, “I don’t view myself as a second-choice goalkeeper. If I’m designated as such, it won’t be easy for the first-choice keeper.”

Donnarumma’s continued struggles, particularly in the Champions League, have paved the way for Safonov to gain more playing time, especially in European matches. This situation mirrors Donnarumma’s previous competition with Keylor Navas, a scenario he openly disliked but now faces again due to his own performance issues.

The year 2025 may prove pivotal for Donnarumma’s career. He must work to change perceptions at PSG and significantly improve his weaker skills. Failure to do so could jeopardize his future with the club and potentially damage the reputation he built during his teenage years. At present, the promise he once showed seems to be unfulfilled.
