Georges Mikautadze: A Year of Triumphs and Challenges
Georgian international Georges Mikautadze experienced a tumultuous year in his football career. After a disappointing stint at Ajax, where he struggled for playing time and goals, Mikautadze’s fortunes changed dramatically with a loan move back to Metz in January.
At Metz, the 24-year-old striker rediscovered his form, scoring an impressive 13 goals in 20 appearances during the second half of the season. His tally surpassed even that of Kylian Mbappé, making him the most prolific scorer in France during that period. Despite Mikautadze’s heroics, which included four assists, Metz were ultimately relegated from Ligue 1.
Mikautadze carried his excellent form into Euro 2024, representing Georgia. He netted three goals in four matches, helping his nation reach the knockout stages in a historic campaign that included a memorable 2-0 victory over Portugal. Although Georgia’s journey ended in the Round of 16 against eventual winners Spain, Mikautadze’s performances caught the eye of several clubs.
Following interest from Monaco, Rennes, and Lens, Mikautadze made an emotional return to his hometown club, Lyon, in a €18.5 million transfer. The move represented a homecoming for the striker, who had previously been part of Lyon’s academy. However, his start at OL has been slow, with limited opportunities as he competes with club captain Alexandre Lacazette for the starting striker position.
As the season progresses, Mikautadze has begun finding the net more regularly. With Lacazette’s contract set to expire in June 2025, the Georgian forward is poised to become Lyon’s primary attacking threat in the near future. This transition could mark the beginning of a new chapter in Mikautadze’s career, as he aims to lead the line for his boyhood club.
