Gasperini: Atalanta dominated Sturm Graz to achieve Champions League milestone
Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini hailed his team’s commanding 5-0 victory over Sturm Graz, which guaranteed their place in the Champions League knockout stages. Gasperini called it a “great achievement” that wasn’t certain at the start of the campaign.
The convincing win ensures Atalanta will finish in the top two of their group, with a chance to secure direct qualification to the round of 16 in their final match against Barcelona. Gasperini urged his players to maintain their humility while also showing boldness against the Spanish giants.
“We needed this win to start 2025 on the right foot,” Gasperini told reporters. “We controlled the match well after a slow start technically. Reaching the top 24 in Europe is a tremendous accomplishment for us.”
Atalanta have been one of the highest-scoring teams in the Champions League with 18 goals in 7 matches. Gasperini said this attacking prowess could pose problems for Barcelona, but stressed the importance of balancing ambition with humility.
“These prestigious matches are hugely motivating for us,” he added. “We’ll give our absolute best against Barcelona as we always do, while being mindful of our tough league fixtures as well.”
The coach also discussed integrating striker Gianluca Scamacca back into the team after injury, potentially pairing him with top scorer Mateo Retegui. “I believe they can play together,” Gasperini said. “We’ll see if it’s from the start or during matches. Having a strong attack is crucial for us to keep developing as a team.”
