Gasperini: Atalanta aims for Coppa Italia success after 2024 final defeat

Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has emphasized the importance of the Coppa Italia for his team following their defeat in last season’s final. The Bergamo-based club is set to face Serie B side Cesena in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.

Gasperini stated, “The Coppa Italia is a key objective for us this season, especially given the tournament’s format which allows for a quick path to the semi-finals and final.” He added that the team’s recent strong performances in Serie A, which have put them at the top of the table, are encouraging but it’s too early to discuss Scudetto ambitions.

The coach also commented on Nicolò Zaniolo’s progress, noting the player’s improved fitness and recent goal-scoring form. Gasperini stressed the importance of patience in player development and the team’s overall strength.

Regarding Ademola Lookman’s recent African Player of the Year award, Gasperini credited the entire Atalanta organization for helping players grow and reach their potential.

As Atalanta prepares for the Coppa Italia match, they will be without Matteo Ruggeri, Giorgio Scalvini, Gianluca Scamacca, and the suspended Juan Cuadrado.
